Common Symptoms of Depression in Teenagers

Depression is common in teenagers, and it can be mixed up with normal teenager issues such as peer pressure and puberty, among others. It is not something that goes away over time or can be overcome with sheer willpower. It may have serious consequences and should require long-term depression treatment.

Below are some of the most common symptoms of depression in teens that you need to look out for:

  • Teenage depression can cause them to use drugs or alcohol, sleep too much or sleep too little, become absent in school, pay no attention to their appearance, and show changes in appetite. They are almost always tired, restless, agitated, and alone.
  • They may lose interest in activities they previously found pleasure in, and tend to have conflicts with their friends and family. Not only that, but they usually lack confidence, make bad decisions, and have trouble thinking clearly and focusing.
  • Their movements, speaking, and thinking may seem slow, and they often have feelings of sadness, frustration, anger, irritation, annoyance, worthlessness, and guilt.
  • They are fixated on their past failures and are extremely sensitive to rejection. They would need constant reassurance because of their feelings of hopelessness and emptiness.

If your teenager shows these symptoms, talk to them, and please consider seeking a professional for help.
